Unable to install display drivers of Graphic card ATI Radeon 4850 HD

I recently purchased a used graphic card from CEX. It is an ATI Radeon 512MB 4850 HD GDDR3 graphic card. I downloaded and installed the drivers from internet. It was working fine but after sometime I noticed a strange issue when I attempted to open a Winrar file. The issue was that the screen used to go blank when I open Winrar file. Currently I am using motherboard graphic card and display drivers are not available. Only video controller is available. Is anyone aware about such issues? If yes then please do the needful.

After I read your post I came to know about the issue. I will surely try to overcome the issue if I can. Previously I also encountered such issues in my system but it has been solved. I think this issue is normally due to some errors with the drivers installed in your system. To overcome the issue I re-installed the graphic card drivers from ATI website. Re-installation will clear all the errors; it was successful to solve my issue. Try this out and I think I will surely help you to overcome the issue.

It is quite an interesting issue that you have posted. Many people had discussed this issue with me in the past and it has been solved. According to me such issues are normally due to some problems with display adapters. To overcome the issue I would suggest you to perform the following steps:
Go to device manger-> right click on display adapters-> finally un-install them. After un-installing the display adapters reboot our PC and your system will automatically detect the display adapters after restart. This solution has helped many people to overcome the issue and I think it will definitely help you.
I performed all the steps that were mentioned by you but it didn’t work out. I tried it three to four times but I gave me the same result. I also tried to install the display drivers but still the issue remained the same as it was initially. I also tried several other methods that I knew but it was just waste of time. Yes I am aware about an application that is specially used for such purposes. The name of application is Vuze. Vuze is a P2P torrenting application which functions legally. Try to download this application from the official website. After you download this application it will permit you to install the display drivers in your system. Once the display drivers are installed your screen won’t go blank here after. Try this solution to overcome the issue. I don’t think you will face any issue here after.

Unable to install the driver when sharing printer across network

Hello everyone I would to share my issue with you. Last week while I was attempting to make my printer on my PC accessible from my brother’s PC. But while doing so I encountered an issue. Everything was hooked across the network and I don’t know the exact cause for this. The issue that you have posted is not complicated. I would like to know some more information from you related to this issue. Is the printer connected to router or to your brother’s PC? If the printer is connected to the router then, attempt to connect the printer directly to the PC. Did you download and install the drivers on that PC? Please try to give me the information related to the question that I have mentioned above for acquiring the exact solution.

How to rotate a pdf document

I have a pdf files which have multiple pages and images. The images were merged upside down. I want to ask how can I rotate them and then save the same documents. The same is issue with the others files tool which have a single scanned document of a brochure. I can print and scan them back in proper position but before that I want to know that is there is any other option too.
This usually happens to many of us when we came across some pdf documents that need to be placed properly. Printing and scanning them back is a long procedure. Acrobat pdf have a inbuilt feature by which you rotate that page and then just save it as a regular way. The first one it to define page properties as landscape or portrait as required. You can configure the settings in page setup option. Second you can click on Rotate view option in the tool bar. Either try clock wise or counter clock wise. The button is located at the top near + and - symbol.
Try this. This tool is called PDFEditor. It provides much than just rotating a page. You can add a blank page in the current document. You can delete a page, crop, extract a single page, add headers and footers, etc. Also you can convert a pdf file to images file format like tif, jpg, bmp, gif, etc. It is free ware tool with lifetime upgrade. The life time upgrade needs a small fee needed if you decided to go for it.

Bug in MS word 2010 "Total Editing Time"

I am a teacher and a student of mine submitted an essay made on MS Word 2010. Looking at the document properties, the total editing time was shown as "4294865233 minutes". I think that's about 9000 years. What would cause a MS Word document to read that for editing time?
The TOTAL time simply means that you have open Microsoft Word until you save and close the document as you will know how long you have work in the document. Press ALT+SHIFT+F11 - locate TotalTime and delete the line.. Click the save button in that dialog then close and save the Word document. The time will be set at 0 minutes, however note that this counter ticks away all the time the document is open.

I guess that if you have several Word documents open, “Total Editing Time” records how long the document in question is the current active Word document. It doesn’t matter one iota whether you can actually see that Word document or whether it’s hidden behind a web browser displaying your favourite ‘research’ website. If that document was the last one you were looking at then its counter is still ticking.

How to share an Excel spreadsheet between multiple users

To share an Excel spreadsheet, select Share Workbook under the Tools menu.

svchost.exe (netsvcs) is always downloading something

I have installed windows 7 in my pc. But I am getting an error that is netsvcs error.It always seems downloading something. Has anybody had it where after the computer come out of sleep mode it just freezes. I am going to upgrade to 7100 to see if it stops i don't think it will because its been doin it since build 7000. Any solution for this please let me know.
I think it can be done only through command prompt. open command prompt and type tasklist /svc /fi "imagename eq svchost.exe". After this you will be able to determine by the PID which service is the culprit. After that open the task manager and go to the service tab. search for the corresponding PID and shut down her. Hope this will help you to sort out the problem.
As your svchost.exe is always downloading something, but you don't know how to shut it down? I think the solution is given there by the previous replier. I have searched many times but got the same solution. So that is your solution and will work definitely. Try doing that only.
I think this can be solved by using Windows Update v3 which you can download from Microsoft website. Download this file fix_svchost.bat and save it to your C:\ drve. After that download this file WindowsXP-KB927891.exe and save it in the same drive. Now reboot the computer and log in to Windows XP in safe mode and after windows loaded log on as “Administrator”. Now Click Start menu then go to Run option and choose the Browse button and find the fix_svchost.bat file which you have saved before just press Open and then OK. After that a black screen will appear and let it to be disappear and then reboot your system. This will solve your problem.

@Rony, sounds like you may have a malware infection. I would suggest downloading Avira antivirus and make sure to download Avira update before you run it. This should clear out any malware (viruses) you might have, unless you have a rootkit infection.

If the application is downloading something then you must identify the open port. It can be a virus. For that click on start and then click on run. Then type cmd and in that pass the following command : tasklist /svc /fi imagename eq svchost.exe. Now you will get the list of open port and in that you can block it by running Windows Firewall. You can also download Comodo where you get a system event manager. This shows you the number of inbound and outbound connection.
At last my experiments solved this issue. i removed qmgr.dll along with wuaueng.dll from "Windows/System 32". I think removing qmgr.dll is enough. if it is not worked try removing second one. qmgr.dll is a module associated with Background Intelligent Transfer Service from Microsoft Corporation and wuaueng.dll is a module belonging to Microsoft Windows Update. From these descriptions it is clear that windows update is downloading data from net even if it is disabled. So i think this is a method used by windows to check whether our system contain genuine os.

Deleting files from system32 in windows 7 or vista is not an easy task. You have to get the ownership of the file. Follow the instructions.

In start menu type cmd then right click cmd and select run as administrator.

To take ownership of the file, you’ll need to use the takeown command. Here’s an example:

takeown /f C:\Windows\System32\qmgr.dll

That will give you ownership of the file, but you still have no rights to delete it. Now you can run the cacls command to give yourself full control rights to the file:

cacls C:\Windows\System32\qmgr.dll /G Appu:F

Note that my username is Appu, so you will substitute your username there.

At this point, you should be able to delete the file. If you still can’t do so, you may need to reboot into Safe Mode and try it again. For the filename in the example, I was able to overwrite it without safe mode, but your mileage may vary.

Mobile phone market declined by almost

For the full year, mobile phone vendors shipped a total of 1.18
billion units worldwide, IDC said, 3.5 percent more than the 1.14
billion units of 2007.

The company described the double-digit drop in mobile phone shipments
in the fourth quarter as an "unusual downturn," but said the first
half of 2009 would remain "very challenging."

"The fourth quarter was the perfect storm of factors to produce this
result," said Ramon Llamas, a senior research analyst with IDC.

"A combination of weak end-user demand, currency volatility, and
limited credit availability prevented the market from experiencing the
usual seasonal increase in shipments," he said.

Llamas said IDC expects the first half of 2009 to be "very challenging
as vendors and distributors grapple with clearing inventory.

Garmin Finds a Friend in Asus for Smartphone

a high picture quality comparable with that of digital still cameras
to camera-equipped mobile phones.
The company will start shipping samples under the product name of
"CE143" in March 2009.

HP urges LaserJet users to patch printers

Hewlett-Packard has warned owners of some of its laser printers to
update their devices' firmware or risk having remote attackers access
previously-printed documents.

In an advisory published Wednesday, HP said that users of certain
LaserJet, Color LaserJet and Digital Sender models are affected, and
urged them to immediately download and install firmware upgrades.

The devices include 10 different LaserJet models -- ranging from the
2410 to the 9050 -- two Color LaserJet models and the 9200C Digital
Sender, a sheet-fed document scanner.

According to San Antonio, Texas-based Digital Defense, Inc., the
security company that reported the problem to HP last October,
attackers can exploit a bug in the printers' Web-based control
interface to "read arbitrary system configuration files, cached
documents, etc."

Exploiting the vulnerability, the Digital Defense researchers said, is
"trivial" with common Web server "directory traversal" tactics. A
directory transversal attack is an HTTP-based exploit that lets
attackers access restricted directories, and execute commands outside
of the server's root directory.

Adrien de Beaupre, an analyst with the SANS Institute 's Internet
Storm Center (ISC), added his voice to the call for patching printers.
"The impact might not seem severe, as in the attacker can view the
printer configuration; however, viewing cached versions of printed

the Windows Mobile 6 operating system are compatible with My Phone
service," said the service's site.
Unlike MobileMe, My Phone looks to be a mobile-only service and only
affords 200 MB of remote storage. While that might be enough for
mobiles it probably wouldn't last 10 seconds on a PC. This begs the
question… Why? Why isn't Microsoft offering the whole enchilada? Maybe
we'll see a complete sync service offered under a different name but
Windows Mobile users hoping SkyBox would be Microsoft's answer to

"We had to build the first laptop because no one else would do it. But

others to copy it," said Nicholas Negroponte, the chief of OLPC, who
predicts that within 3 years there will be 5 to 6 million machines a
month built by companies around the world.

At present contract manufacturers of electronics make OLPC XO machines
at the order of the organization, who then sells its low-cost laptops
to customers around the world. Mr. Negroponte wants actual hardware
makers to deliver the laptops, which reduces expenses and speeds up
time-to-market of the XOs. But considering the fact that OLPC XO is
very inexpensive, for hardware manufacturers it may not be an
interesting product to sell.

According to Mr. Negroponte, approximately 500 thousand children
worldwide already own OLPC XO-1 laptops.

The G in MRG, until release 1.1, has been the missing link. Red Hat
officials said it has been the case largely because its programmers

Nvidia Reportedly Develops x86 Central

Nvidia Corp is reportedly working on its own x86 central processing
unit, a rather unexpected move considering the fact that the company
does not have license on x86 instruction set, but also a fairly
logical one now that the company has switched its chief scientist.

A news-story by The Inquirer web-site claims that "Nvidia is
definitely working on an x86 chip and the firm is heavily recruiting
x86 engineers all over Silicon Valley". Back in 2006 the designer of
graphics processing units hired numerous specialists from Stexar
company, which also designed central processing units (CPUs) and
related technologies. Additionally, back in January '08 Nvidia
replaced its chief scientist David Kirk with William Dally, who is
known for his expertise in parallel computing technologies as well as
work on Cell/Larrabee-like chips.

Since Nvidia, unlike Advanced Micro Devices or Via Technologies, does
not own a license on x86 instruction set originally developed by Intel
Corp., it cannot formally launch x86-compatible processors. However,
Nvidia may license IBM's Power architecture or even code-morphing
software developed by Transmeta. In that case Nvidia's microprocessors
will hardly be really competitive performance- and support-wise.

Theoretically, Nvidia could launch an x86 CPU without getting a
license from Intel Corp., but a legal battle with the world's largest
chipmaker would hardly end in Nvidia's favour. Moreover, considering
the fact that Nvidia will have 0% of the market from the start as well
as no infrastructure in place, and that the legal dispute would last
for a couple of years only it is hardly possible that by the end of
the litigation the company will have substantial enough market share
to justify a law suit from Intel.

Nvidia badly needs its own microprocessors in order to promote its
core-logic sets as well as platforms. Since forthcoming x86 CPUs from
AMD and Intel will have graphics processors integrated, there is
hardly a lot of space on the market for Nvidia's chipsets, hence,
creating of system-on-chip products similar to Tegra, but aimed at
personal computers, may be an option for Nvidia.

Firefox 3.2: Ubiquity, Prism, and customization

According to the magazine PC Pro, version 3.2 of the Firefox browser
loaded a field for entering commands and the possibility of a specific
window for web applications.

In addition to a merger with Ubiquity, Firefox 3.2 is expected to take
an engine to completely customize the browser interface without having
to install a particular extension. Note that Prism, a Mozilla Labs
project, will also be incorporated into Firefox 3.2 with the
possibility of SSB (Site Specific Browser).

Asked about the Chrome browser that creates a specific process for
each tab opened, Mike Connors said: "When we look at consumption for
each tab, this makes a lot of memory [... ] Remains a unique process
more efficient. "

Microsoft testing new search service

Microsoft Corp is testing a new version of its online search service
internally under the name of Kumo.com, a spokesman for the software
company said on Monday.

The service is not yet available outside the company, but may
eventually form part of Microsoft's attempt to catch up with Internet
search leaders Google Inc and Yahoo Inc.

The new service was unveiled in an internal memo sent by the head of
research at the company's online services division on Monday. It did
not provide details about the new features.

"Kumo.com exists only inside the corporate network, and in order to
get enough feedback we will be redirecting internal live.com traffic
over to the test site in the coming days," said the memo from Satya
Nadella. "Kumo is the codename we have chosen for the internal test."

The memo was first made public on The Wall Street Journal's All Things
Digital blog.

Microsoft's Nadella reckons the company can put together a better
search engine than those currently available.

"We believe we can provide a better and more useful search experience
that helps you not just search but accomplish tasks," Nadella said in
the memo. "An explorer pane on the left side of results pages will
give you access to tools that help you with your tasks."

Telefonica, other telcos to launch Linux phones

HELSINKI, the one of the largest mobile operators in the world,
Telefonica, joined wireless Linux foundation LiMo on Monday and
committed with five other major operators to sell phones using its
software this year.

Vodafone, Orange, Japan's NTT DoCoMo, Korea's SK Telecom, and the top
U.S. operator Verizon Wireless will also introduce phones using LiMo
software in 2009, the operators said in a joint statement ahead of
Mobile World Congress trade show next week in Barcelona.

"With a host of operators pledging to deliver handsets in 2009, we
expect LiMo to start making real tangible progress in 2010," said
Geoff Blaber, an analyst at research firm CCS Insight.

The market for software platforms on cellphones is led by Nokia's
Symbian operating system, but it has lost much ground over the last
year to Apple Inc and Research in Motion.

Computer operating system Linux has had little success in cellphones
thus far, but its role is increasing with the LiMo platform and Google
Inc using Linux to build its Android platform.

LiMo, a non-profit foundation, hopes to benefit from its focus on
giving greater say over software development to telecoms operators.

"Android is enjoying a huge amount of momentum at the moment in terms
of operator commitment and manufacturer support," said CCS' Blaber.
"However, LiMo remains a strong longer term bet for a host of
operators that seek an independent and service neutral platform."

Sagem buys broadband business of Gigaset

Sagem Communications has entered into an agreement to acquire the
Broadband and WiMAX business of Gigaset Communications GmbH, a
subsidiary of Arques Industries AG and Siemens AG.

This should be the first acquisition for Sagem Communications since
being acquired by The Gores Group, a US-based private equity firm, in
January 2008. The addition of the Broadband and WiMAX assets of
Gigaset should enable Sagem Communications, in accordance with its
strategy, to enhance its position as a leading global provider of
broadband products and to gain access to new technologies and
customers. Sagem Communications has 6,570 employees worldwide, and
posted sales of 1.3 billion euros in 2008.

Through the transaction, Gigaset Communications would strengthen its
core business as the European market leader for cordless DECT phones.

become a world leader in broadband terminals, convergence and digital

Windows 7 Build 7048 Rumor

While Microsoft is currently working on finalizing the Release
Candidate of Windows 7, a new version of its forthcoming operating
system, reserved for a community of accredited testers, appeared on
the download BitTorrent networks. Stamped in 7048, this build,
according to the names of the files made available, was compiled on 19
February. For now, only the 64 bit versions of the system are shared,
but the user at the origin of the leak that he will soon line the 32
bit versions. Officially, users have instant access to that beta 1 of
the system, which corresponds to the build 7000.

Quite a few are new to the program of this new version, which did not
prevent more than 16,000 people already start the download. Among
other things, we can see a new animation in the Start menu, new icons
for applications like Paint or Calculator, an overhaul of the taskbar
to enable it to accommodate a larger number of applications, or mild
changes in Windows Media Player. The Release Candidate is expected to
make its appearance around the month of April.

Bluetooth 2.2

According to the analysts over at IMS Research, the Bluetooth Special
Interest Group (SIG) is planning to release an updated Bluetooth in
mid 2009 with a promise to deliver transfer rates at higher speeds
than previous versions.

The idea of the new High Speed Bluetooth specification is to work with
WLAN or USB for improved data rates, and will be known as Bluetooth
10x and Bluetooth 100x, respectively.

For this to work, a mobile phone will need to be equipped with WLAN or
UWB radio. Hence Bluetooth 10x will be used first, since many of the
newer handsets already have WiFi capabilities built-in.
According to the SIG, Bluetooth 2.2 will enable wireless video
streaming, printing and other Wi-Fi related tasks. It will also meant
that faster speeds than that under v1.1 can be achieved.

Since we don't have any news of devices that will use this new
Bluetooth specification, we can't tell if it delivers its promises.
But once we have some compatible devices on hand, we'll try it out and
let you know.

We will be able to know more about Bluetooth 2.2 in mid 2009 when its
get launched by Bluetooth Special Interest Group. It is expected that
Bluetooth 10x devices will be released first followed by Bluetooth
100x, which if used along with Ultra Wide Broadband radio, may be able
to give 480mbps of data transfer speed.

For this to work, a mobile phone will need to be equipped with WLAN or
UWB radio. Hence Bluetooth 10x will be used first, since many of the
newer handsets already have WiFi capabilities built-in.The way I see
it, smartphones should stand first in the line for any upgrades,
although some of the modern WiFi-enabled feature phones could also see
such an update.

Bluetooth 10x is expected to give better performance in Wi-Fi devices
and this will be pretty useful especially in portable media players.
The new iPod Touch 2G has a Bluetooth chip embedded in it but it has
not yet been activated. Once the final specifications are released, we
can expect Apple to release the update to enable Bluetooth 2.2
services.

it to my high-definition TV. It looks great, and the Apple Remote

not only do I not want a keyboard and mouse floating around my living

Now, there are plenty of VNC-style screen-sharing apps on the App
Store, programs that let you see any Mac's screen and control it
remotely. But my TV is plenty big enough. I didn't need to duplicate
the Mac mini's screen on my iPhone, I just needed to control the
cursor and type in a few short items.

When Air Mouse Pro is running, the top half of the iPhone's screen is
a two-button trackpad, similar to the one you'll find on any Mac
laptop. The bottom half of the screen is for other input methods you
can toggle between--there's a full iPhone-style keyboard, a set of

forms of advertising, including the online ads that Google depends on,
but said that he doesn't expect Google to experience a decline in

On Wednesday, when asked if the company's diversity would shield it
from the economic slowdown. Schmidt said, "We don't predict things
like that." in a 'CNBC' television interview. But, he added, "from my
perspective it's hard to imagine why you'd see a decline." Schmidt
also said Google continues to look at acquisition opportunities, but
said he wasn't sure that prices were at their lows yet, or that the
economic slowdown has reached its bottom.

Schmidt was speaking from the Wall Street Journal Eco:nomics
conference in Santa Barbara, California, where he was scheduled to
make a presentation on Wednesday evening.
The appearance comes a day after Schmidt raised eyebrows at an
investor conference by referring to privately held messaging service
Twitter as a "poor man's email system."

Asked about speculation that the comments were part of a negotiating

Google branches into expandable ads

Google is expanding its AdSense program--literally.

The Web search giant announced Wednesday in a blog post that it is
pitching advertisers on the use of expandable ad units, those adverts
that start out as banners or square ads and launch larger ads that
cover much of the Web site's content. However, Google says that unlike
the most annoying varietal, these expandable ads won't enlarge on
their own or with a simple mouse-over; users will have to click on the
smaller ad to get the larger ad.

Many users may find expandable ads annoying, but as Google points out,
the format could be valuable to both advertisers and customers when
used to show movie trailers, video game clips, or other images that
require greater emphasis on detail.

Google said that advertisers are automatically eligible to use the
expandable ads if they have added AdSense code to their site's source
code and enabled image ads. Google also noted that the program is
currently available only to specific advertisers in the U.S. that can
bid on specific ad placement.

Google also reminded advertisers that earnings will be based on
whether they use cost-per-click ads (CPC) versus cost-per-impression
(CPM) ads, promising that CPC expandable ads will generate more
earnings when a user visits the advertiser's landing page, and not
when a user simply clicks to expand the ad. Google has created an FAQ
page with more information for advertisers.

The expandable ads aren't likely to make a Google earnings skyrocket,
but because they require user interaction to expand, they also aren't
likely to create animosity from Web users.

Microsoft and TomTom Settle Patent Infringement Cases

Microsoft Corp. and TomTom N.V. today announced that they have settled the patent infringement cases brought by Microsoft before the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington and the International Trade Commission (ITC) and by TomTom in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia.

The cases have been settled through a patent agreement under which TomTom will pay Microsoft for coverage under the eight car navigation and file management systems patents in the Microsoft case. Also as part of the agreement, Microsoft receives coverage under the four patents included in the TomTom countersuit. The agreement, which has a five-year term, does not require any payment by Microsoft to TomTom. It covers both past and future U.S. sales of the relevant products. The specific financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

The agreement includes patent coverage for Microsoft's three file management systems patents provided in a manner that is fully compliant with TomTom's obligations under the General Public License Version 2 (GPLv2). TomTom will remove from its products the functionality related to two file management system patents (the "FAT LFN patents"), which enables efficient naming, organizing, storing and accessing of file data. TomTom will remove this functionality within two years, and the agreement provides for coverage directly to TomTom's end customers under these patents during that time.

Horacio Gutierrez, corporate vice president and deputy general counsel of Intellectual Property and Licensing, Microsoft Corporation, stated:

"We are pleased TomTom has chosen to resolve the litigation amicably by entering into a patent agreement. Our car navigation patents, which are at the heart of the enhanced auto experience enjoyed by millions of drivers today, have been licensed to many companies, including leaders in the car navigation sector. Lee Kai-Fu, president of Google in greater China, said one reason Google lagged in the mainland search market was because it did not offer music downloads, the missing piece to its strategy in a market where it trails leader Baidu.com.

"We are offering free, high quality and legal downloads," Lee told reporters. "We were missing one piece ... we didn't have music."

The service offers downloads of some 350,000 songs — from Chinese and foreign artists — a number that will rise to 1.1 million in the coming months, said Gary Chen, chief executive of Google's partner www.Top100.cn, a Chinese music website co-founded by basketball star Yao Ming.

Music from artists signed by Sony Music, Warner Music, EMI and Universal Music will be available on the service, which Google has no current plans to expand beyond China, said Lee.

"This is the first serious attempt to start (monetizing) the online market in China. I can't overestimate how important this is," said Lachie Rutherford, president of Warner Music Asia Pacific and Asia chairman of the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI).

Users will be able to search by musical measurements such as the level of "beat" in a song and "instrumentality," as well as by artist and song name.

Microsoft to shut Encarta

Microsoft Corp. has, on Tuesday, announced its plans to shut its online encyclopedia, Encarta, the largest competitor of the communally-crafted free Internet online encyclopedia Wikipedia. The software giant's online encyclopedia would be closed on October 31. Microsoft will stop selling the software products by June this year. One exception is the Encarta Japan Web site, which will stay live until the last day of this year.

People who have paid for a subscription to MSN Encarta Premium, which offers them access to more information, will get a refund for fees paid beyond April 30, although they'll continue to be able to access the site until it shuts down in October. Microsoft will continue to offer technical support for the software products for three years. The software giant has discontinued a couple of other products recently. Late last year it announced it would stop selling OneCare, its consumer antivirus product. It also killed off a mobile browser research product last year.

In a message posted on the MSN Encarta Web site, Microsoft says, "Encarta has been a popular product around the world for many years. However, the category of traditional encyclopedias and reference material has changed. People today seek and consume information in considerably different ways than in years past."

Online, Microsoft offered a limited selection of professionally edited content for free and a larger selection for a subscription. But the offerings paled when compared to those at sites that could use the work of thousands of contributors. Wikipedia, for instance, offers 2.7 million articles in English. Google's Knol, which like Wikipedia depends on user-generated content, has more than 100,000. Encarta has 42,000 entries. Encarta did try to adapt, inviting users to submit suggestions for changes to articles, but those suggestions first had to be checked by a member of the Encarta staff. And Encarta did not allow users to submit new entries.

Yet Encarta itself began to lose ground among users with the rise of Internet search engines like Google that became capable of quickly connecting users to a seemingly infinite array of free online information resources. Among those resources is Wikipedia, a repository of more than 10 million reference articles produced by volunteers in over 260 languages, including more than 75,000 active contributors.

A spokesman for Microsoft declined to comment on whether Wikipedia contributed to Microsoft's decision to shut down Encarta. The spokesman said the move was "one piece of a broader strategy to continue to evolve our product offerings to address the next wave of people's search and research needs."

For those of you who prefer to communicate in Hindi but did not have an easy way to type and send e-mail in your language of choice, Gmail has something to offer you. Google has launched a new feature in Gmail that makes it easy to type e-mail in Indian languages.

When you compose a new mail in Gmail, you should now see an icon with an Indian character. This feature is enabled by default for Gmail users in India. If you do not see this function enabled by default, you will need to go the "Settings" page and enable this option in the "Language" section.

Once you click the Indian languages icon, you can type words the way they sound in English and Gmail will automatically convert the word to its Indian local language equivalent. For example, if a Hindi speaker types "namaste", it will get transliterated to its phonetically equivalent Hindi text.

Gmail currently supports five Indian languages -- Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam. So you can select the language of your choice from the drop-down list next to the icon.

Security tool to detect Conficker worm

The US Department of Homeland Security released a tool on Monday to detect whether a computer is infected by the Conficker worm.
The department, in a statement, said the detection tool for the Conficker worm, also known as DownAdUP, had been developed by the US Computer Emergency Readiness Team (US-CERT).

"While tools have existed for individual users, this is the only free tool -- and the most comprehensive one -- available for enterprises like federal and state government and private sector networks to determine the extent to which their systems are infected by this worm," said US-CERT director Mischel Kwon.

"Our experts at US-CERT are working around the clock to increase our capabilities to address the cyber risk to our nation's critical networks and systems, both from this threat and all others," he added.

The worm is suspected to have infected million of computers running the Windows operating system and Windows maker Microsoft has offered a 250,000 dollar bounty for those responsible for the worm.

US-CERT recommended that Windows users apply Microsoft security patch MS08-067 to help provide protection against the worm.

The patch is designed to prevent an attacker from remotely taking control of an infected computer system and installing additional malicious software.

Malware could be triggered to steal data, generate spam attacks or turn control of infected computers over to hackers amassing "zombie" machines into "botnet" armies.

The worm is programmed to modify itself on Wednesday, April Fool's Day, according to computer security specialists.

Conficker had been programmed to reach out to 250 websites daily to download commands from its masters, they said, but on Wednesday it will begin connecting with 50,000 websites daily for instructions.

Ericsson will break its own HSPA world record with the world's first demonstration of HSPA multi-carrier MIMO technology, providing peak downlink data rates of 56Mbps, at the CTIA Wireless exhibition, April 1-3 in Las Vegas, USA. This is another step for HSPA Evolution, further enhancing the mobile broadband experience.

Leading US computer maker Hewlett-Packard said Tuesday it is studying the possibility of building machines based on Google-backed Android operating systems.

Google's open source operating software only recently debuted in mobile telephones with Internet capabilities.

"We are the world's leading computer company and it is only natural for us to want to understand its applications for our competitors' products or ours," HP spokeswoman Marlene Somsak said of research into Android.

"Regarding how or when HP might introduce any Android-enabled platforms, we decline to talk about products that may be underway."

An Open Handset Alliance of technology firms backing "Google phones" based on Android platforms has been steadily gaining members.

Recent inductees include British mobile network giant Vodaphone; Japanese electronics titan Toshiba Corp., and Sony Ericsson, a joint venture involving Japan-based Sony and Sweden-based Ericsson.

Alliance recruits will make Android-based mobile telephones, lend programming expertise to the Android source code project, or offer products or services for the handheld devices.

The handset alliance was established in 2007 by Google and 33 other firms, among them Intel, HTC, China Mobile, Motorola, Qualcomm, T-Mobile, Telefonica, LG, and eBay.

US telecom operator T-Mobile began selling the first Android-based Google phone, dubbed "G1," last year.

News that HP is exploring ways to put Android to work in computers is the first hint that the operating system may be shaping up as a contender in a market long-dominated by Windows software made by Google's rival Microsoft.

Malicious sites jump 200 percent

The threat from Web-based malware is growing at a rapid pace, with nearly 200 percent more malicious sites identified this month, according to a new report from MessageLabs.

Released Tuesday, the MessageLabs Intelligence Report revealed that 2, 797 new Web sites hosting malicious content including spyware, were blocked by the security vendor in March, a 200 percent jump over the previous month.

The rise, which was the highest since October 2008, was largely due to a spike in the number of images containing injected scripts. Such images were also found in e-mail messages during the month, said MessageLabs, now a Symantec company.

In addition, 61.6 percent of all Web-based malware intercepted in March were newly identified.

Also on the rise: the number of e-mail messages carrying links to malicious sites, said the security vendor. Some 20.3 percent, or one in five, contained links to such sites in March--a 16.5 percent increase over last month.

HP considering Google Android for its

HP is currently testing Android - a free, open-source operating system - for a possible netbook, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing people briefed on the matter. The company has not decided whether to bring such a product to market, the report said.

HP, the world's largest PC maker, did not return calls seeking comment.

Many in the industry, including Microsoft, are anticipating the release of laptops running Android, although no PC maker has publicly committed to it. Android is used on smartphones like HTC Corp's G1, but is being designed to support all kinds of connected devices. Chipmaker Freescale, which recently began making chips for netbooks, plans to expand its offering to include chipsets for Android. As the husband of supermodel-turned-pop star Carla Bruni and friend to some of France's most powerful media figures, Sarkozy has long basked in his cozy ties with the entertainment industry, which has embraced the measure.

But many in Europe have denounced it, saying government controls needed to enforce the law could open the way for invasive state monitoring that violate privacy. And legal challenges at home could derail it: The opposition is trying to get the law declared unconstitutional.

Predictably, music, film and other industry groups have welcomed the measure. John Kennedy, chairman and CEO of the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry, said Wednesday that it represents a "sea change."

Critics, however, worry about civil liberties.

"We should be careful about interfering with the freedom of exchange of information," said Wolfgang Zankl, professor at the University of Vienna and president of the European Center for E-Commerce. "This is a constitutional right which no one should be barred from."

Some Internet experts say the law will be technically impossible to apply. It requires Internet subscribers to install special software that would enable authorities to track down and identify those suspected of illegal downloads, but some experts say such programs do not yet exist.
